Describes March the Best
🙈

I'm so so sorry, and extremely guilty. I am supposed to write a part 2 for my previous January Update cause it was too long, (Read it here if you haven't, it's interesting 😉). But never got to that.

I had it all stored in my head, the entire post, and I wanted to type it out the very next day, and I got sick again, which is not cool, and while the fever went down in 2 days, the cough lasted for over 3 weeks. So every time I an idea or a phrase pops up in my head, so does my cough! It was like this huge barrier for my thinking process.

I tried Strepsils first, then tried Homoeopathy, cause it usually works like magic for me, unfortunately not this time, then tried western medicine (It was this teeny tiny tablet, and I hate tablets in general, cause I'm extremely scared of choking, but somehow managed to swallow one, and apparently it works so fast that you feel drowsy in 2 hours, what nonsense, I was up until morning.)

Then had to turn for home remedies, honey and lemon, masala milk, turmeric milk, ginger and pepper tea??! Nope, still didn't work, at one point I was wondering if I've got TB, and if I'm nearing my last days, even If I were in my last days, I could never have enjoyed anything with this cough!

Finally, at the end of the 3rd week, my mom in law to be sent this Ayurveda porridge like thing she made with Dry ginger, pepper and 7 other herbs, brown in colour, and tasted very medicinal, but was sweet, so you can tolerate the taste.

I was asked to have it before bed, and to not eat or drink anything afterwards for at least 2 hours, and I woke up in the morning with zero cough and phlegm!

I couldn't thank her enough, and got her to promise me that she will give me the recipe one day,OLD IS GOLD!

And that kind of made me realize, how much the practices of those days are forgotten. We think that being modern, and living in a toxic environment, eating quick fix foods means we are cool, and going with the flow, but it also means that our life span is decreasing and that we are ageing really fast.

Just look at everyone, most of the people barely look their age, they look way elder, and tired 24 x 7, like programmed robots, we just do what we have to, to go with the flow, it's all about securing a good job, earning more and then what?

Spending all that you earned on high tech items? automobiles? a house, mansion, villa? What do we do for ourselves? Most of the things we do, it's to impress others, none for us.

Those before us, our parents and grandparents, they had a better reputation than we do in the society, a good job, a roof to shelter, extremely healthy meals, and they had more money and time, and had even more fun than we do now.

Nowadays, when we need a getaway, it doesn't happen just like that, first we have to see if we are free, then make a budget, allocate an amount for the vacation, and there is a 50% chance that we will turn down the idea, cause it's much cheaper spending time at home watching a movie with some snacks.

Am I right or am I right???!!!

January & February

A lot did happen actually, but my gold fish memory doesn't serve me well, there are only 3 I can think of right now.

01. Good Market- Race Course

Bliss

Been on my bucket list for over two years, finally decided to drop in one Saturday, and it was the best decision and experience ever!

Can you imagine the amount of positive vibes emanating from one place, it's a very beautiful and friendly community, and you feel much closer to nature at Good market.

It's right in the heart of Colombo, but for me it was more like I was in another country or city at a Farmer's market.

I really loved the fact that they do not have disposable cutlery or straws, and the food, yummy and super healthy, if you are a vegan or simply an organic lover, this place is for you.

If you remember my last post, I added a few excerpts from my Facebook status, but didn't add the next part, here is the missing part :)

"It is a difficult process, cutting down and getting used to, but when you look at the bigger picture, you'd be happy to give up.
Just give a visit to Good Market one Saturday, you'll know what change feels like, such a beautiful community, positive vibes, and a zero toxic atmosphere.
Akmal told me this yesterday,
May be the reason that many people don't come here as much as they do to supermarkets or malls is probably cause they see it from the outside or read the word organic somewhere and label the place expensive.
Just drop in sometime, you'll know " :)

02. Public Library

I've been an average bookworm since I was a teenager, I had my genres, but language never mattered to me, I would read 3 books a week back then, and it is now that I am actually catching up on Movies and Songs released in the 2000's.

I've been eyeing to get a membership at the public library for over 5 years now, and finally went and submitted the application forms, there is one more trip I've got to make to the library, once I do that, I can mark a complete  on my list.

03. Eat Street 2017 - 11th Feb at Green Path

The first ever eat street at Colombo was during the final quarter of 2016 if I'm right, and it was not held in a big scale, but it was okay, nothing extra ordinary, except for the Marbroc Bubble Tea.

I was quite skeptical about going here for the 2nd time, cause the first left my feet scarred forever, the sun burn is not that visible now, but is still there.

This time I went a bit prepared, covered from head to toe, but I guess it didn't help either. There were much more stalls than last year, but nothing impressive, we did try some french fries with cheese topping, and fruits, but the heat from the Sun, from the grills did not help at all. Sometimes I wish they had put up a marquee.

Also, there were tables laid out in the middle of the road, but having your meals, boiling under the sun, not a very good idea. We did walk into the park after a while, but I wonder if I will ever go for another street food fest after this experience.

Or if you don't intend to grab brunch or lunch, then the evening hours would be great to visit.

These 3 were pretty important, but I did catch up on loads of movies during February, English and Tamil.

March

March 2017 was not as bad and enlightening as last year. (If you had not read my personal best posts for March 2016, you can read part 1 here, and part 2 here.), but it was okay I guess.

I did cut myself in places, and had oil just jump up to my face, but these are just minor issues when I think about the best things that happened in March.

Cooking with NO FLAWS

I am a good cook, but not a great one, and usually my dishes end up having less salt than usual, but less is way better than more right? Or the dishes have a flavour which is quite complicated for everyone.

After what felt like a decade, I decided to give cooking a shot once again, and this time, I was proud of myself. *Pats on Back*

I tried out Curd Vadai, Palak Chapathi, Dhal Fry, and Chicken Curry, and got the thumbs up, you will survive from the younger sister, who is like the Gordon Ramsay of the family.

Weight GAIN

I've been on the under 50 kg list like forever, and everyone who knows my eating my habits are most often shocked to hear that I never put on.

I went on various diets these past years, high carb, high protein, high junk, Nutrigain, I even tried the junk food and carbonated drink diet for a while, nope, didn't even gain 100g.

And very recently I decided to stay away from oily and spicy food, at least for 5 days a week, and I've given up instant noodles and carbonated drinks for good, I mean I will drink if I have to, when I've got no other choice, but I like to limit it to 1 bottle a week.

So after I started this crazy diet, I manged to gain 4 kgs in 2 weeks. I don't maintain a chart or anything, but when I do crave for something, to hell with the weight gain.

But here is something I found out, not only did I gain weight, but also lethargy. I've finally fought it, cause I'm not known to be a sloth, and here I am typing away.

WORKing OUT

I am not hitting the gym, just moving my arms and legs, so you guys can calm down, got my running shoes, so trying my best to do some light cardio, or just walk 3 km a day.

Holi!

One more spontaneous event of the year, we planned it out in less than 2 hours, and was a huge success, minus the dry hair and glitter.

Will post about it in detail on another post, and my greatest disappointment of this month is that my writing, wording skills have just dropped, I make poor captions and a very bad blog post, it doesn't feel right.

Choices and Temple Run 2

Been wasting hours on these two games, but no regrets. All my siblings and cousins have installed Choices, and we've finished most of the books and are awaiting new chapters. It's like a tv series addiction, and the latest topic of squad discussions.

Temple Run has this Global Challenge going on for the next 7 days, so it's all about being on top.

Mopster

Is that even a word? Idk

Anyway, I'm up to something quite crazy and monochrome with my mop, if you are on Instagram and follow me, you get to see the pictures, if not, IF I capture more than 10 images of my mop, I'll put it up on the blog.

I gotta wrap up this post now, but before that, remember that it is Summer in Spring if you live in the tropics or anywhere close to the equator, so make sure you are hydrated, carry some rose water to refresh yourself, a decent sunscreen or a day cream with SPF, and your umbrella AND shades, must haves.

Also, don't let the heat get to your head, every ones losing their temper these days.

If you follow me on Instagram (aimthi) make sure you check my mopster updates. Follow me on Twitter and FB (aaqimthi), for blog and other public updates.

January 2017: Not So Whoosh

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

2017! The year of the ROOSTER!

Haha, not that it matters, but it IS a great year for me so far. So the Water Rooster did get lucky?!?! May be, may be not, may be it's just my brain ageing, and reaching a bit of maturity, nah I'm kidding.

2017 So Far

Okay, so when compared to 2015 and 16, this year is wow, cause it's moving super slow, letting me savour each and every moment, unlike 2015 which just whooshed! That year is just not on my mind. I can't remember the movies, memories, MY BIRTHDAY! Nada!

2016 as you can remember was a grim year, and more philosophical for me, it was like my year of sudden divine knowledge of words and life.

Back to the present, this year has been all that I wanted the past 2 years to be, could be my resolution to not have resolutions, and be spontaneous.

My TO DO list for the day is in my head, and on my memo, to check them off.

Or you know, it could be the weather, sunshine at noon and rain at night. The Rains at night are the best, to read books and sip on some Lemon Tea.

Resolution for the year 2017: Be Spontaneous

01. Resolution 2016: Visit as many exhibitions as possible

Pakistan Single Country Exhibition - 13 to 15th Jan, at the BMICH

The first week of the year was caught up with work, and office get together s, and more work. I'm not complaining, I'm the happiest when we've got work at the beginning of the year. Woohoo!

I heard about the exhibition through a friend, and all I replied with was 'don't call me to any shopping festival'.

And there I was, at the exhibition on Saturday. To be honest I was tempted by the thought of Pakistani Food, Kabab, Keema Biriyani, nom nom, but to my greatest disappointment, NO FOOD STALLS!!! 😭 (I mean those Kottu Mee and Maggi stalls don't count, nah)

Akmal's Crappy Photography

They did have stalls of Engineering products, Auto parts, Agro food, Textile and Clothing, Designer wear, Handicrafts and Ethnic, Pharmaceuticals, Gems and Jewellery, Carpets, Marble and many more except food.

The Setup of the stalls, lights, products on sale, the vendors, all of them made it look like I was actually walking through a Pakistani Bazaar.

Also they had Kurtis, and the Disha Patani style ethnic jackets, bags, footwear. You could buy a Kurti for a mere price of 1500 LKR, but I was in no mood for these, so all I purchased were a few Masalas, Pickles (sorry, but India has the best pickles), Natural Rose Water for the Skin, and a Sandalwood Ubtan. (I'll do a mini review on the last 2 in an upcoming post)

But seriously, Food 🙎

Kala Pola 2017 - 22nd Jan, at Green Path

Now the 3rd week was tricky, cause I was down with fever for 2 days, and a freaking sore throat, and the thought of staying in my room one more day kinda threatened to make me fall sick again. I HAD to move.

I'm not a huge fan of going out on Sundays, cause I come back tired, it's office tomorrow. But unfortunately this time the Kala Pola was only one day again, and on a SUNDAY.

Plus I had fever yeah, and I wanted to get out, so I headed to my cousins on saturday, for some yummy seafood cooked by her, and finished 1/4th of their candy jar. Sour chewy toffees 😍

My cousin Akmal accompanied me to both the exhibitions, but this time, my sister Ahra tagged along too.

You see, the thing about taking siblings is that all your activities are limited, not that I'm gonna do anything to break the law, but I have to get home on time, no roaming around in buses, or walking. Complicated!

Anyway, cannot complain, went ahead, and if I'm right, last time we had only around 30 ish stalls, this time there were like 300!

I loved this piece so much that this was my caption on Instagram

"Vaes Dothrak... the city of the horselords"
In search of the other ....

It was drizzling, and then raining, and back to drizzle, that was such a bummer. But the fact that people kept going in spite of the weather, held me there.

Unlike last year, there wasn't much variety to be awed by, more canvas paintings this year, and scrap art, sculptures and very less carvings.

Plus cause of the rain, and that many stalls, I couldn't capture good images like last year. And sometimes, while looking at these beautiful scrap arts, I wonder why they don't make awards out of it. I mean it's good for the environment and unique.

If you had not read my post on Kala Pola 2016, you can read it here.

P.S. don't laugh after reading it, I never stuck to my resolution 😸

Following are a few captures from the Kala Pola.

This one painting was my favourite, I even managed to get the Artist's contact details this time,
the play of colours is amazing, these two paintings has a 3D feel when light
falls from the back.

This is what I am talking about, why can't this be an award?

Perfection

Yes, this is Colombo

Chemex 2017 - 26 - 28th Jan, at SLECC

CHEMEEEEEEEEEEX!

The First Chemex exhibition I went to was back at School, and it was at the BMICH, loads and loads of experiments, industrial stalls, soap making. I even managed to get a soap as a souvenir, which is still inside my cupboard. They were testing out, and I was asked not to use it on my skin.

Back then a soap without Sodium or Potassium Hydroxide was a huge deal, and Sri lankan students were testing out soap recipes with coconut oil as an alternative, but now when I think about it, and about all the Organic soaps, shampoos, shower gels that are available world wide, I'm not sure I'm that excited.

I think the 1st one was somewhere in 2011 if I'm right, so after 6 like years, I was expecting to have the same kind of excitement. So headed there with Akmal.

The entrance fee was 50 LKR, and the Saturday I went was the 3rd and final day of the exhibition, and those in the stall looked like they needed a long vacation, I did go to one or two, only to come running back, cause it was school all over again. No Thank You!

There were only 2 stalls I was interested in, one was something related to Palm Trees, the fruit and tuber (Odiyal), they had Odiyal Flour and Boiled Odiyal Flour, apparently it's much healthier than the American flour we use here. When i went home and told mum about it, she was not at all surprised, instead she told me all the food they make with the flour.

While I was looking for the English term for Odiyal, I found a link for Odiyal Flour recipes, check it out here.

Also on display were a few samples of  Ice cream, Yogurt and other snacks and sweets made out of Palm fruit.

The other was the Toxicology stall, thanks to Hassana, a classmate, I did check it out, and I loved it. All I have to know about the top drugs, addiction, common food combinations that are unhealthy and about the impact food dyes have on us and our off spring.

All in all, we were there only for like 30 mins, and the best part was meeting an old friend after years, nothing else matters.

Chemex would have been best for students, not me.

DID YOU KNOW that having Cigarettes and Coffee together very often can lead to Pancreatic Cancer?

This topic registered on my mind, and I somehow found this image online, I can't remember the website, if I did, I would've linked it.

What follows was my facebook post that accompanied these images:

"Yesterday's Chemex Exhibition was great for Students, but here is one topic that I saw and that which kinda stuck on my mind.
Makes you wonder....
Most of the concerns are chromosomal damage, so if we are healthy even after consuming these, we should be worried, for our children.
People know, about the effects of dyes, carbonated drink, processed meat, harmful chemicals in food, beverages, beauty products, and that we have to go organic, chemical free and be eco friendly.
But none of us are ready for change, people advertise, have campaigns, protest, but a very very very low percentage.
It is a difficult process, cutting down and getting used to, but when you look at the bigger picture, you'd be happy to give up."

I didn't add the next part, cause the the part 2 of this post is going to be all about it.

Wait, did I say part 2?
Yeah, this itself is pretty long, and nobody likes to read a very long post, no matter how interesting. So the January checklist has to go for a part 2.

But this is the end of Exhibitions for January, and who knows what is in store for Feb? No, no, not Valentine's Day, I do not celebrate and don't want to. I mean once upon a time I was excited for Feb, love was in the air, blah blah blah, but at this age, MEH!

While we are at Valentines Day, I guess it's best if I end this, Quoting Sheldon:
"Given that St. Valentine was a 3rd century Roman priest who was stoned and beheaded, wouldn’t a more appropriate celebration of the evening be taking one’s steady gal to witness a brutal murder?" 😈

Kumarika Herbal Hair Oil for DRY and DAMAGED HAIR: To the RESCUE

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

This product has been on my review list like forever, but somehow I never got a chance to write about Kumarika Hair Oil, MY SAVIOUR!

Haha Yes, you read that right, my hair Saviour indeed. Here is something you need to know, for the past 10 or more years, I've used every Shampoo, Conditioner and Leave on available in the Country.
Tresseme is the only brand that I've not used so far. The rest, tried and tested.

Though 75% of the brands promises soft silky smooth tangle free hair, well, hear me out, none of them work. WHY? Cause they are a broth of chemicals in a bottle, that you put ON your scalp. None of them managed to reduce my hair volume, or to hydrate it.

You know your hair products are good when the results stay the same until your next wash

After years of testing, I some what found a shampoo that worked well with my hair, no drastic change, but the Dove Nourishing Oil Shampoo did help reduce the dryness and made it manageable. Even the fragrance wasn't over whelming. This was my second time with the brand, and this time the results were good.

Unfortunately at that time the Nourishing Oil conditioner wasn't available in the country, so I had to use the Intensive Repair, and all was good.

Fast forward 8 months later, One not so fine day, I just started losing thick strands of hair. My hair just hung limp, dead, split, and when I comb through, I'd lose at least 10 times more than the usual.

I've never experienced hair fall before this incident, I panicked, tried to stop thinking about it, but then when strands started to come off every time I touch the bottom of my hair, that was my cue.

First things first, completely stopped using shampoo and conditioner, cause they were the only hair products which I used at the time.

Then all I did was look for a 100%  herbal hair product. Shampoos and conditioners were not even an option, and all I was left was with Hair Oil as an option.

I found the Kumarika Hair Oil, and purchased it right away after reading the ingredients at the back. Anyone born in Sri Lanka or India, most definitely knows the benefits of Coconut, Aloe Vera, Centella and Mukunuwenna  for hair.

But just to be on the safe side, I purchased the smallest bottle available. Been 2 years now, best decision ever.

Read on to find out my hair experience with Kumarika Hair Oil, and to know how I use it on a daily basis.

Product Description

  • Formulated with the Goodness of Natural ingredients and Indigenous herbs
  • Prevents dryness, nourishes hair from within, strengthens hair roots
  • Aids in Hair GROWTH
  • Prevents split ends, Premature graying

Ingredients

Coconut Oil, Aloe Vera, Gotukola (Centella Asiatica), Mukunuwenna (Altemanthera Sessilis), Amla, Vetiver Root.

Fragrance

A very mild herbal scent, unlike other oils which makes you cringe, tear or make you feel like a granny. 😜😉

My Experience with the Product

I used the product before a shower, and whenever I felt like it, a regular scalp massage with oil is a quite essential tip in Hair care. And this was all I used, no other products or medication.

After 2 weeks of use, my hair fall completely stopped, and within the next 1 to 2 months, my hair got back its shine, no limp hair, no loose hair hanging by the ends, or major split ends.

After months of using the oil only, I gradually got back to a mild herbal shampoo and conditioner with less silicons in it, which I stopped six months ago.

Now I've got healthy curls, thanks to 3 current products, Kumarika Herbal Hair Oil, African Black Soap and Spa Ceylon Neroli Jasmine Conditioner.  (You can read my review for the latter here)

I can't lie that I've zero frizz, cause you can never be frizz free, its there, just a little.

How I use the product

01. Oil Treatment: Usually 30 mins before a shower, I massage the scalp with the oil, you can also warm the oil a little and apply. The best way to get oil directly on to the scalp is to part your hair in places, and pour directly from the bottle, the nozzle is such that only drops of the oil dispenses.

02. As a Leave On Conditioner: I do the oil treatment once a week, so on other days I take a shower, I use 3 drops of the oil as a leave on/in conditioner. It reduces the frizz, gives a shine, and adds moisture.

For Best Results, use very less oil, and avoid the scalp area

03. Before Bed: Every other day between showers, I apply the oil before bed, but this time not for the scalp or crown, but below the pony tail line, focusing mainly on the ends. But again, don't overdo the oil, a few drops would do.

For easier application for 02 and 03: Store the oil in a small spray bottle and use it as a oil mist.

Price: 245 LKR for 200 ml/ 6.7 fl oz (Around 1.60 US$)

My Overall Rating: 5/5

This product is available in all leading supermarkets and pharmacies in the Island.

Also available in Australia, Bangladesh, Dubai, France, India, Indonesia, Jordan, New Zealand, Pakistan, UK, West Indies and many other countries.
