I've been a bookworm my entire life, and a book addict
this past year, with the current read being the 24th book of 2019.
But here's what I know, all this
time, I've never owned, purchased or read a cookbook.
I mean, I flip pages while
browsing and never liked them cause most recipes are overrated, complicated or
simple but a page long.
And one day BAM, I fell upon a
chance to own a copy of
FIXIN' TO EAT: Southern cooking for the southern at heart by Katie Moseman, and just like that, I'm reading it on my ebook and going 'WOW' or 'Interesting'.
FIXIN' TO EAT: Southern cooking for the southern at heart by Katie Moseman, and just like that, I'm reading it on my ebook and going 'WOW' or 'Interesting'.
"To be 'Fixing to' means you
are planning to do something. For Southerners fixing to isn't just an
interesting turn of phrase-it's a whole state of mind.
Others might say they are about
to eat, but Southerners say they are fixin' to eat."
This book is for those who are
new to Southern cooking or just about anyone who is looking for an inspiration
or to just want to try their hand at a different cuisine.
Fixin' to eat features home style
recipes that range from Breakfast, Starters, Main Dishes, Side dishes,
Desserts, an exclusive Bourbon Honey Milk (mouthwatering, yet one I can never
drink cause I don't drink Alcohol) and Libation Lessons in between each
category.
The Libation lessons are short
and sweet and will help even a dummy master the art of pairing Wine, Beer and
Spirits with Southern food.
So, if you are playing host, with
the help of this, you can do a complete spread.
WHAT'S INSIDE
BREAKFAST
Only 06 recipes, so it's very
limited, but all of them easy to make, especially the strawberry cream cheese.
STARTERS
The usual you would expect,
Salad, Soup, but I came across an interesting recipe, featuring Coca Cola, I
had to double check just to make sure.
And southerners do love their
Cheese, and are very wild in their choice, not the usual cheese you would
expect.
MAIN DISHES
Plenty of Meat recipes for the
meat lover (and amazing sauces) but I'm very low on the meat, and I was eyeing
the Sandwiches and that PIMENTO BURGER which I will definitely try making at
home.
SIDE DISHES
This was a rather disappointing
section FOR ME, but for those who are completely new to cooking and have no
idea, this comes in handy.
DESSERTS
14 recipes and each one
mouthwatering as the other. Judging by the ingredients, none of them are too
sweet, so depending on your mood it makes for a perfect dessert or a tea time
snack.
FINAL VERDICT
It's a simple NO NONSENSE book,
that just gets straight to the point, no page long backstory on the recipe.
But I would've liked it even more
if it included pictures of the food instead of illustrations and if it had more
variety.
