Today onwards my resolution for Sundays, visit more
Exhibitions!
As mentioned in a previous post, Sundays are the
days where I’m productive the most, so when this came up (Thanks to Akmal, my
partner in crime), I couldn’t say No to my heart (ever the curious one), ‘cause
honestly I’ve never been to an art exhibition, and WHY NOT this time?
When: 31st of January Sunday 2016
Where: Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, AKA Green Path
What:
Featuring the work of over 275 local painters and
sculptors, the Kala Pola had everything from various styles of Painting, Crafts
and very unique Sculptures, and also Live Portraits that costs less than 2000
LKR.
Painting
While I like abstract art, they are not my
favourite, let’s see, I’m more towards photography, so I prefer paintings that
are HD, I mean with that perfect colour and texture that keeps me gaping.
Well, what can I say, I was not disappointed, I
found many that exactly matches my criteria, what attracted me the most were
Nature inspired paintings or Landscapes in general. I managed to snap pictures
of a few.
Then there was this particular type of painting that
intrigued me the most (again, did not capture), very intricate design, fine tiny details, definitely time consuming, had to observe it for a long time
in order to understand that its indeed a painting and not a print. (I Regret
once again).
Crafts
Another I came across were these particular type of
crafts, made out of scrap materials, mostly nuts, bolts, parts from old cars and
bikes, it’s great thinking actually, very happy to know that we have people who
think so artistically and out of the box.

Then there was this one stall featuring crafts carved out
of Trunks or Thick roots of trees.
It’s very easy to miss them, the carvings, as they
blend in so perfectly, but when you look at it a little hard, then you see the
faces! (reminds me of the old gods of westeros, these are just not creepy).

It also did feature a stall exhibiting creations by
kids, and a separate kids art corner, and was happy to see my brothers creation
amongst them.

Other Highlights
- Two Hand Drawing
- Washable Painting (Painted on Rocks using a special method, and they are washable too)
- Soil Painting (Paintings done using pure Sri lankan soil)
All in all, it was very good, it’s a great
opportunity for the local artists to showcase their talents, if you like art,
this is for you, if you don’t, it’s still for you.
I also managed to buy 2 canvases for only 700 LKR!!
Along with an abstract art stencil kit for my cousin.
My greatest regret was that I couldn’t get the
contact details of selected artists, hopefully next time.
And the only cons with the event were that they had it only
for a day, and while I found canvases, I couldn’t find any other art supplies,
or an art corner for adults.
I really wanted to purchase a painting, but with so
many options, confused as usual.
Keep checking the Sri Lankan Art Gallery website and
Newspapers for more events like this, hopefully the next Kala Pola will be in
2017, till then….
